The Nav1.8 sodium channel, encoded by the SCN10A gene, is a voltage-gated channel found primarily in pain-sensing neurons. It's a genetically and clinically validated target for pain sensing, making it a primary target for developing non-opioid pain therapeutics. Unlike most other voltage-gated sodium channels, Nav1.8 is also resistant to tetrodotoxin inhibition.
